July 8, 1997 Announcements

A clean fix for Warp 4's Image Viewer association problem.

Practice Corporation announces a clean, object-oriented, one-time FIX for the Warp 4 image file association problem.

Much better than IBM's fix for this problem, with our fix you can set the default association for image files to any program you like, using normal program association techniques.

This fix is free and offered with our compliments to OS/2 users. Get the fix from http://www.practice.xo.com

Avarice Walkthrough page completed.

The Avarice Walkthrough at http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Castle/2701/ has been completed, though I will be tidying up for a few days yet.

The walk through option gives concise directions on what to do, with more details in the Objects and Places options.

And there are Questions I would like answered to tie up some loose strings.

Final version of LXOPT released.

On June 30, 1997, Mike Ruddy released the final version of LXOPT to the public as freeware. DevBahn feels this release is very important to OS/2 developers, now and in the future, which is why we have obtained permission from Mike to archive LXOPT v1.22 permanently in our archives.

LXOPT v1.22 is a Working Set Tuner/Optimizer for 32 bit OS/2 code for OS/2 v2.x and above. Having had some time to work with it ourselves, we can say that it is nothing short of amazing in it's results!

The final freeware version of LXOPT can now be found in HOBBES Incoming directory ... ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/lxopt122.zip

and soon to be ... ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/dev/util/lxopt122.zip

and of course, in the ever expanding DevBahn archive (See our website to see our progress to date). http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/8867/index.html

DevBahn continues to strive to collect every known OS/2 development resource that is still in existence, and to provide confirmation on the "extinction" of any other resources. With your support, we can and will achieve this goal. Thank you for your time and your continued support.

Regards,
Dean Mills, DevBahn Archiver/Founder.

Oberon Software Releases Java Programmers Toolkit.

Oberon Software Releases Java Programmers Toolkit

July 7, 1997, Mankato, MN - Oberon Software today released its first Java based toolkit. "This builds on everything we have learned over the years about multi-threaded programming under OS/2." said Oberon founder and President Brady Flowers. "We know that developers will find many good uses for this toolkit and we ourselves will be using it extensively in the months to come as we begin to release a range of new Java based applications and applets."

Building on its strength as a supplier of terminal emulation and telecom software, Oberon has included in the new toolkit Java implementations for ANSI, VT100, and Telnet terminal emulations and ZModem file transfers as well as a number of Java AWT extensions and utility classes such as circular spin buttons, Regular Expression matching, CRC calculations, and Internet e-mail (SMTP) utility classes.

The library contains an extensive collection of classes for scientific function plotting which, in addition to being attractive to scientists, engineers, educators and students, can also be used by anyone needing to display, size, and rotate three dimensional images.

Also included in the toolkit are OS/2 native classes for accessing the serial port, HLLAPI programming, and a REXX interface which allows a developer to add REXX scripting support to Java applications. Oberon Software plans to release cross platform versions of these native classes in a forthcoming release of the toolkit later this year.

Oberon Software allows the toolkit runtime package to be freely distributed without royalty and has announced an introductory price for the programmer's portion of the toolkit or $39.95. All interested parties are invited to contact Oberon Software for more information. Oberon Software can be reached by phone at 507-388-7001, their web page at http://www.OberonSoftware.com, or by mail at Oberon Software, Inc., 1405 E. Main St., Mankato, MN 56001, USA.

OS/2 is number three in Key rate as of July 6th.

The bovine team is always looking for new people to help make OS/2 the client that cracks the code! What code? What team? The Bovine Team! The RC5 challenge is like the SolNet or DESCHAL that went after a simpler 56bit encrypted message-- a RSA challenge. That challenge was beaten a few weeks back and made some rounds in the magazines. The Bovine Team is currently the only group (at least publicly) attempting to break an even harder version of the 56bit DES encryption. There are many "clans" under the Bovine banner and the Warped Clan wants to be number one! So, if you'd like to help jump to: http://www.ionet.net/~colin/rc5.html

From there you can get the latest news and events and jump to the Bovine headquarters. The latest clients let you grab a bunch of blocks to process all day in the background so it won't interfere with your daily work. Every block helps so join in the fun and help make encryption a stronger tool!
