Ben;

I recently purchased a new drive and will be attacking the task of installing an OS/2 partition to coexist with a Windows 98 partition on a separate hard drive. I use Windows only because my internet access is ADSL through BellSouth. Of course, they know nothing about OS/2.

I will be using information from your articles to assist me in configuring my OS/2 setup. If I can successfully get ADSL access under OS/2, Windows will quickly go away.

What I really need is a pointer to a cookbook (step-by-step) guide to connecting to an ADSL provider for a computer literate, but network novice, user.

In the meantime, I am learing a lot from your series. Thanks.

Does your ISP by chance use ppp over Ethernet? If so you may have some difficulty with OS/2 support. it's one of the issues that i have ran into. So far i'm not aware of any support for this? (correct me if i'm wrong please)

You may just want to get an actual DSL router and do NAT. Most ISPs just use a DSL bridge (though the call it incorrectly a mode). Any orther thoughts on this anyone?

I am very interested in this subject since I, too have ADSL with bellsouth.net. I have just purchased a Lynksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router and will be attempting to set it up in the next few days. I will report results and problems. (It will be a Win98 setup, at first, with OS/2 afterwards. I will be using it for three computers in my home/office.

Ok, while I have never actually done *DSL modems under OS/2 there are certainly people out there doing it. I wish I could point you directly to a guide, however, I can't. 8(

I suggest doing a search through OS/2 newsgroups using Deja News. (www.deja.com).
In the meantime if I come across any useful info on that I'll keep it for inclusion in a later part of the article.

There are two articles in the April issue of V.O.I.C.E. that cover ADSL; one on setup, the other on LinkSys Cable/DSL Router.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I'll keep checking back every so often. Once I have any results to report, I'll post an update. Don't look for anything right away. Other duties have higher priority.

<canned rant>
PPPoE is the devil's spawn. It sucks off 10-15% of your bandwidth just so you can't host a server.
</canned rant>

I haven't had to use it because I was one of Bell Atlantic's early adopters. However, from what I've heard there can only be a significant performance hit and no benefit to the end user. It's just so that ISPs can continue to oversubscribe their networks and throttle back bandwidth. Demand a static IP, but if that's not available then DHCP should work fine. Make sure it's DHCP. If you say "DHCP" and the tech-tard says, "What?", it's PPPoE and you should immediately burn your phone and head for the nearest emergency room for booster shots.

Just when we thought we were going to get always-on connections to make things like videophones reality, Ma Bell (now split into little bastards) holds back the progress of technology again.
