the Rave: DragText v1.1- by Jim Little

Every so often, an especially unique or innovative program appears. The kind of program that is so useful, you wonder why IBM didn't include it with the operating system. The kind of program that leaves your jaw dropping in an attempt to figure exactly how the author did it.

DragText is one of those programs. Several months ago, Rich Walsh released version 1.0 of DragText. Available as freeware, version 1.0 added some amazing features to the OS/2 desktop. Almost any text in a standard Presentation Manager control could be selected, right-clicked, and dragged to an entry field, where it would be inserted. Even more useful was the ability to drag a file or folder to insert the pathname or contents of the file.

DragText v1.0 was an impressive program. With the release of version 1.1, it's even better. Now, you can drag text straight onto the desktop, and a special DragText object will be created. Drag that object back onto an entry field, and the text will be dropped. And if you drop a URL, a URL object will be created!

The new version also has more, prettier drag icons to make the action of any drag obvious. It also includes a few advanced features, like the ability to insert a custom-formatted directory listing when you drop a folder object. Despite all these features, the program is easy to configure, with a nicely laid-out settings notebook that contains all options. It's also easy to install, and the install program advises you of potential problems depending on your version of OS/2.

Speaking of problems, you might think that a program that makes such significant modifications to OS/2 would have a lot of compatibility problems. On the contrary, DragText is an extraordinarily well-behaved program. There's a special page in the settings notebook that allows you to turn off any part of DragText for any program. In addition, the author conducted an extensive beta test and pre-filled the page with the three applications that were found to cause problems.

Even DragText's registration policy is amazing. Only the new features of version 1.1 cost money. You are given six weeks to evaluate them. But even if you decide not to register, you can continue to use the features that were in the freeware v1.0 release. Wow!

DragText v1.1 is an outstanding update to an already impressive program. And with the liberal registration policy, there's nothing to be lost by upgrading. I highly recommend this program to everyone who uses OS/2--after using it for a few weeks, you won't want to do without it.
