Isaac Leung (P.Eng.) got a degree in Engineering Physics followed by a Master's in Electrical Engineering after which he promptly got a job as a product engineer at a company which makes high speed datacom chips. Following the dot-com meltdown, he's back at school studying biophysics and optical properties of semiconductors. He is old enough to have cut his computer teeth on Commodore 64's and first played with OS/2 1.3 EE while at a summer job with IBM. The first PC he ever owned came with Windows 95, but he soon slapped on OS/2 Warp 3 and has been Warping ever since. In between looking for a new job, he plots to take over the world.

Advertise with OS/2 e-Zine

From The Editor

Happy New Year! OS/2 is living on for yet another year. Not that we should be surprised at all. It is a very capable and efficient system for home and professional use.

Thanks!

I'd like to give thanks to all our contributors, without whom OS/2 e-Zine could not exist. Every month, I wonder if we'll have something to print. But somehow or other, people always comes through with an article.

Just as important are our dear readers. I know that there are a few well-known individuals in the OS/2 community (I'm sure you all know who they are) who are quite active on the web and in the newsgroups. However, one of the little things that keep me going, and that most people aren't privy to, are the little bits of feedback that I receive regarding OS/2 e-Zine from various "anonymous" users. These are readers from all around the world, most of home I've never seen or heard of before on the 'net. I can only imagine there is a larger silent majority enjoying OS/2 on their computers and our e-zine's content! If you're one of those "silent readers", feel free to drop me an e-mail, even if it's just to say "hello!". It's nice to know we're being read.

Of course, I'd be remiss if I forgot the owners of BMT Micro who are providing the web hosting for us. Without this valuable service, who knows how we'd access OS/2 e-Zine!

Still going up...

Yeah, I know I said this when I first signed up, but as the 2004 has come around the corner, I feel the same again. Things are still looking good, and maybe even better, for OS/2 users.

BlueCAD is now available for free. It's a nice, simple CAD application for OS/2, an oldie, but still works. Drafting standards, unlike computing standards, haven't changed. Measurements are still shown the same way and in the same units. More recently, OpenOffice 1.1 has been released for OS/2, and I'm pleased to report that for an early beta, it works remarkably well. We now have two serious office suites to choose from! Also from Innotek (do these guys ever stop?), they've also released a beta of their new font engine. How promising is this? You can even get anti-aliased fonts on your desktop and all your folders!

The whole computing world seems to have stabilized a bit, allowing enough time for our few quality developers to "catch up". (IBM is planning to switch all their desktops over to Linux! That should slow down the adoption of closed, Windows proprietary formats a bit). The mark of success? Nobody knows I'm using OS/2! My friends and colleagues don't give it a second thought. All they know is that I'm always on-line, and they can communicate and trade documents and files with me with nary a glitch.
